How to Protect an Automatic Watch While Traveling

Travel adds risks that are less common at home: impact, rubbing, moisture, loss, and theft. A little preparation goes a long way toward protecting your watch.

Use a dedicated watch case

Keep each watch separated from keys, chargers, jewelry, and other hard objects. A padded travel roll or rigid EVA case helps reduce rubbing and everyday impact.

Keep valuable watches with you

For valuable pieces, carry-on storage is usually preferable to checked luggage. Keep the case closed and discreet when moving through airports, hotels, and crowded areas.

Choose the right size

A one-watch case is ideal for a single spare watch. Two- or three-watch rolls work well for longer trips, while rigid multi-watch cases provide more structure when carrying a larger rotation.

Watch for water and temperature changes

Do not assume a watch is water resistant simply because it once was. Seals age over time. If the watch has been exposed to salt water, heavy humidity, or a hard impact, follow the manufacturer's care recommendations.

After the trip
